IVO DE KERMENTIN – THE ADVOCATE OF THE POOR!

Saint Ivo (Ivo Hélory de Kermartin) was born in Minihy-Tréguier (Côte-d'Armor – Brittany) on October 17, 1253 and died on May 19, 1303. He was a tertiary Franciscan (Third Order of St. Francis).

He soon went to study in Paris where he stood out for his intelligence in the study of Philosophy, Theology and, above all, Law.

On his return to his homeland, he accepted the position of judge of the ecclesiastical court in the diocese of Rennes. With his wisdom, impartiality and conciliatory spirit, he undid enmities and won the respect even of those who lost the cases. The uncompromising defense of the wronged and the needy earned him the title of Advocate of the Poor. A title he continued to deserve when he became a priest and built a hospital in the house he inherited from his parents (Manor of Kermantin), where he cared for the sick with his own hands.

He is the patron saint of lawyers and his day is celebrated on May 19th.

In São Paulo, Brazil, there is a church dedicated to Saint Ivo. It is located in Largo da Batalha and has a relic of the Saint on display.

May this great Saint friend of all the wronged and those who, due to lack of resources, cannot defend themselves, inspire and be a reference for all lawyers!

Saint Ivo, pray for us!
